No longer a Madonna Concert Virgin 11-19-08 @ 2:51 p.m.
Last night was the much anticipated Madonna concert here in Detroit! I'd been waiting months since we got the tickets, and finally, the BIG night.
It seems the consensus here from Detroit fans is mixed. I had a great time and loved the concert, but then again, I didn't have her older tours to compare it to. I will say that a TWO HOUR late show start is unacceptable! WTF. The tickets said 730 and the doors didn't open until 745. In the bitter cold- 30 degrees or something. Luckily, my friend Elena said let's keep moving around the crowd so what would have been a two hour or so wait was only a half hour maybe. I wish I could have taken a pic of the MASSES of people standing outside Ford Field.
But, even with the boredom of waiting for the concert to start and trying to regain feeling in the cold extremities, when she took the stage all was forgiven. Not from most of the crowd though I don't think. It was surprising how little applause and screaming/yelling she got, at least from what I could hear from where I was sitting. I mean, I thought the crowd would go wild for her- since she skipped us on her last 2 world tours. To pour salt on her hometowners wounds she kept saying "No place like home" and petulently, "I don't come home often so please make a big deal about it!" Overall she was pretty icy and didn't have much of a reparte with the crowd. I've seen Bon Jovi act more excited to be here- and this isn't where HE grew up.
On another positive note, our seats were upgraded!! Embarassingly for Madonna she did not sell out the standium, by quite a large margin. So much so that the entire 300 levels were emptied out and funneled down to the 200's. Probably a sign of the times/economy here in MI. People can't afford to shell out money on a concert. Maybe that added to her attitude?
But IMO, she put on a fabulous show! Lipsynching or not, she danced her ass off. And the special effects were dazzling, the costumes vibrant and fun. Most importantly, I was happy with the songs she played. She pretty much did a 50/50 mix of old and new. (According to the paper) I know a lot of people wanted more old stuff, and hell, I could listen to her 80/90's stuff for hours, but you know she wants to perform her new modern songs. I like the Hard Candy CD and the songs she chose from it so I was pleased. Oh, one fun thing she did was let an audience member request one "oldie but goodie" as she put it. So we got to hear Material Girl, acapella style. He requested something before that and she denied it, not sure what it was, but I love Material Girl.
Here's what was on the set-list:
"Candy Shop" "Beat Goes On" "Human Nature" "Vogue" "Die Another Day" (Video Interlude) "Into the Groove" "Heartbeat" "Borderline" (updated rock version with guitar) "She's Not Me" "Music" "Rain" (Remix) (Video Interlude) "Devil Wouldn't Recognize You" "Spanish Lesson" "Miles Away" "La Isla Bonita" "Doli Doli" (Dance Interlude) "You Must Love Me" "Get Stupid" (Video Interlude) "4 Minutes" "Like a Prayer" "Ray of Light" "Hung Up" "Give It 2 Me" I guess my only complaint with the set list is that I would have liked to hear more songs from Confessions on a Dance Floor...and more from her True Blue CD. Ya, looking at it now I can see a lot was left out, I wish she could have put on a 3 hour show, she just has so much she can play. Either way, next time she is in town I'm there!
