I am so happy that CA made it legal for same sex marriages! And not just because I love Ellen.
I've been meaning to blog about this for a few weeks, but better late than never. The thing that pisses me off and for me ruins the opposing sides argument- is that they argue that it "changes the very meaning and definition of marriage". Some unimportant guy was quoted on the radio this morning saying this.
Ok, I'm married- what is marriage about? Ummm, let's see....LOVE, COMMITTMENT, TRUST, LOYALTY, SHARING COMMON GOALS, SHARING/GIVING OF YOURSELF....I could come up with more but that pretty much sums it up. Most importantly and basically it's love and committment. Does it really matter who the people are- men or women; black, white or hispanic; blonde hair or brown; skinny or overweight?? Not really.
I think the "other side" has just come up with this argument to deflect what this is really about and that is people who are scared- scared of different things of people; scared of change. If you're married, look at it this way, when you said your vows, what was more important- when it was said "this man and woman" OR, "to love, honor and cherish- till death do you part?" I think it's obvious what the IMPORTANT parts were.
So why not? Why can't two women or men get married? It's not for me, but I think it's great for anyone to find the right person for them, the person they'd like to spend the rest of their lives with! I think it's about time...and I just wish that more states would do this. Period. So, go Ellen and Portia!!
