A Tale of New Furniture (finally!) 04-24-08 @ 9:59 p.m.
This year we dedicated some of our tax return money to getting new furniture. Something we'd actually planned to do last year, but never got around to. We shopped around to the usual stores in the MI area: Art Van, Gardner White, JC Penny and Value City Furniture. We found a set we really liked at Art Van, and one at Gardner White, but GW's was much more expensive than AV. We were just waiting for a special sale to come along, one did and so Dave went down to Art Van to see what the price would be. But, the set we wanted was gone. Our sales lady wasn't around and no one had any idea what set he was talking about or what happened to it! So, off we went to check out Value City Furniture to see what they had.
We found something very comparable there as to what was at AV, $400 cheaper...but this is where it gets interesting: Dave and his buddy go to pick up the couch and loveseat on a Tuesday (3 weeks ago). They get home and we unwrap it and the couch is a MESS. There are 4 tears in it, several stains, when you lift up the cushions you see many seams unsewn and even staples hanging out! The loveseat was in similar, albiet less-worse condition. We call and they say they'll deliver a new set at no charge and pick up the old set on Friday...but that set was also in bad shape with tears.
A manager was supposed to call us to discuss and get another new set out, but we never received a call. So we go down there on Sunday, giving them time to call or do what they needed and talked to a manager. Who seemed to be asleep at his job. I don't think one word we said affected him, and to get any response from him at all I think we would have had to light a firecracker up his ass. I was so pissed when I asked for the explanation as to why a manager did not call....(no reason) and finally said that I'd appreciate some empathy on his end! He apologized but really wasn't phased.
We got another set last Saturday the day before we had my family over for my dad's 60th birthday where I cooked my first turkey (with my sister's help!)...we got a flaw-free loveseat but no deal on the couch (another huge tear). Which, I do want to note that starting from the first set they had to deliver to us, we asked repeatedly that these sets be looked at first prior to shipping out to us. Each time it supposedly happened, but obviously they were blind. Thus, wasting 3 seperate days of our time waiting for the delivery! One down, one to go.
Yesterday, Wednesday, 3 weeks from the first set, we finally got an exceptable couch. No tears or stains, wow, who'd have thought they make such a thing at this point! I asked the delivery man for his thoughts on why this happened, but he gave me bullshit on how this happens at even finer stores like Macy's. I told him this is what my take is on it: WE won't be shopping with them again. While yes we got a good deal on a set (but for a cheaper price you do get cheaper quality, which we were aware), and mistakes and flaws do happen, it happened FOUR TIMES! It took 4 sets to get one good set!! And still, no one at Value City seems concerned to look into what the real issue was that caused all of this trouble! Thus, when I repeat this story, all I can tell anyone is that I guess they really don't care.
At this point we're just happy to have new furniture and be done with it! And I thought the problems we had with DJ's nursery furniture was the worst......some how every set of furniture we've bought, we've had a problem. From our bedroom set, to DJ's and now the living room stuff. And these were from 3 completely different stores! I hope I don't need to buy any furniture for the next 50 years!
