Don't have much time now, but wanted to post what's been going on. I wish I had time now to fill you in on the bachelorette party and wedding (for my sister Rosie)...but will have to do that another day. Gotta run back to the pharmacy. Here's what I emailed to a friend of mine today:
I should probably take it easy this week. I was in the emergency room, Fri night, the night before Rosies wedding! From 8-4am! To try and make a long story short, last Monday I noticed that my breast had a plugged milk duct, which just looks like a small bump. I called the doc and they said to keep an eye on it. Tuesday it was getting bigger (I'd had it a few days before Mon, but I finally sort of paid attention to it etc.), and more painful, so I called the doc and they had me come in and get antibiotics. They said the meds should make it improve in 1-2 days, take the redness and swelling down. Well, by Friday morning I was in excruciating pain, it was super red and even more swollen, the meds were obviously not working. Well, the nurse told me that I should wait the weekend and to just keep nursing to help remove the "plug" (it was also infected though, which is why they gave me antibiotics.) But, it was like razors, it was worse than my c-section recovery, I bet it compares to a kidney stone, just HORRIBLE. I was in tears all day Friday, nearly called Dave home from work. Anyway, later that night as I was putting a warm compress on it, one of the sore spots broke open! I'll spare you those details, but that's why I went to the ER. They had us there 8hrs, in the end they said it was a mastisis, which was just an infected plugged duct, which we knew. It's just that the antibiotics I was on weren't working, which I knew, so it was getting worse with infection. They wanted to admit me, but I refused since I had to go to my sisters wedding! So, I got one IV of antibiotics (they wanted to give me a second one the next afternoon, thus why admit me) and left with a prescription for more.
The wedding was awesome! I'll have to show you the pics, they did a great job with everything! It was so beautiful. The day for me was hard, I wasn't able to make my 7am hair appt. with my sister and the wedding party, but found a place closer to home to take me later so I could get a little sleep. I managed to stay at the reception till 11:30. I had a dr's appt today, these antibiotics ARE working, which means less pain, less swollen/redness etc. I'm not allowed to breastfeed (because of the new stronger antibiotics), but at this point he's just weaning early is all, because I was not about to try again after this! At least it seems to have help dried up my milk too, so I don't have to keep pumping several times a day, which is painful and time-consuming. So, they just drained the infection some more, and I'm going to be stuck with this open sore for at least another week or two, which sucks. But at least it's not too painful. I go back again to the doc's Thursday for more follow-up.
Hope that wasn't too much info. But, if you decide to breastfeed, you'll have to know the possibilities, LOL. The doc said this happens when you might have a small crack, the baby may bite you or whatever, and then bacteria in the mouth can get to it. Well, guess that's all the excitement I have to share!
